Breeo Live fire grill featuring outpost grill and kettle hook

Today we're taking a thorough look at Breeo's brand new live fire grill.

Live fire cooking has been growing in popularity here in the U.S. over the last couple of years, and while I find it funny that the current trending method is actually the OG cooking method, I'm here for it.

What is Live Fire Cooking?

Live fire cooking is the oldest technique known to man and involves cooking food over burning wood embers or charcoal.

Breeo Live Fire Grill vs. Fire Pit Cooking?

Breeo has offered a number of live fire cooking accessories to go with their smokeless fire pits for several years. So why would the live fire grill be necessary? Why would I want one over (or in addition to) the other?

1. Cooking Height

The new live fire grill has a cooking height of about 34" which is a much more natural and comfortable position than cooking on the X series smokeless fire pit.

2. Storage and Prep Space

Anytime you're cooking outdoors you need a place to set things down. Trays of raw food, clean trays for cooked food, cooking tools, sauces, seasonings, and so on. The Breeo live fire grill includes 2 foldable side trays as well as 2 shelves below so there is plenty of room to set things down, unlike with a smokeless fire pit.

3. Shallow Basin

The shallow basin of the live fire grill offers a couple of advantages. First, the shallow basin means less fuel is necessary than a fire pit. Second, the cooking food is able to get closer to the heat source.

4. Adjustable Airflow

In a fire pit the airflow is fixed and remains wide open because the goal is a raging hot fire that produces minimal smoke. The live fire grill has an adjustable slider to open and close the bottom vents to help you have more control over your fire and (gasp!) increase smoke for your cook.

5. Dual Outpost Capability

Breeo fire pits are all Outpost capable, meaning they have a hole in the top in which to insert the Outpost rod. The live fire grill actually has 2 of those holes enabling you to use 2 Outpost accessories simultaneously.

6. Easy Cleanout

Unlike the Breeo smokeless fire pits, the open fire grill has a removable ash pan truly simplifying the clean up process between cooks. In the fire pits, ash either has to be scooped out or sucked out with a ShopVac.

7. Where it's Made

Almost all Breeo products are made in the USA. However, the live fire grill is the one product that has been manufactured outside of the country.

Our Breeo Live Fire Grill Review

Breeo Live Fire Cooking Accessories

The skillet rest is the only cooking accessory that comes with the base model of the Live Fire grill. And that's not a bad thing. Many loyal Breeo users already have a lot of the cooking accessories that you would use with the grill so it would be redundant to force them to buy duplicates. So I like that Breeo is making a stripped down version available.

For buyers who are starting from scratch in the world of Breeo live fire cooking, they also offer live fire grill bundles that allow you to save a little bit of money from purchasing each item individually.

Skillet Rest

The skillet rest offers a stable place to sit a pan or skillet on the edge of the live fire grill or fire pit. It's made of 304 stainless steel and is easy to attach or remove from the grill before, during, or after your cook. When it's cool it can even be used as a trivet.

Outpost Kettle Hook

The Outpost Kettle hook attaches to the Outpost rod and can adjust along the full height of the rod as well as 360° around the rod. There are 3 hanging points on the hook from which you can hang the kettle (see next) or various cuts of meat using s-hooks or cooking twine.

Cast Iron Kettle

The Breeo cast iron kettle is available in 1 gallon, 1.5 gallon, and 2 gallon sizes. It comes pre-seasoned with flaxseed oil and includes a lid and stainless steel handle. Making soups, chili, and warm beverages over a live fire just sounds cozy, doesn't it?

Outpost Grill

The Outpost Grill also fits onto the Outpost rod and is height and swivel adjustable. It is available in both 19" and 24" sizes. 24" is recommended for the live fire grill, but either size can be used. We had the 19" already on hand here from reviewing the Y-series smokeless fire pit, so that's what we used, but have since upgraded to the 24" to give us more cooking space.

I love the versatility of the Outpost grill. Need more heat? Drop it down. Need less heat? Raise it up. Flames got out of hand? Swing it around and away from the fire.

Flattop Griddle

The Flattop Griddle is also available in 19" and 24" (as well as 30" and even 42"), however only the 24" version will work with the Live Fire Grill. This carbon steel flattop comes pre seasoned and ready to cook on right away. It easily attaches and detaches from the grill. The 24" griddle measures 16 inches deep by 24.25 inches wide and includes a grease drip and silicone handles.

The Flattop griddle only covers about half of the grill basin, leaving room for heat to still reach other cooking methods like the Outpost Grill and anything hanging from the kettle hook.

Pizza Oven

The live fire pizza oven fits over the grill just like it does the fire pits, however the grill puts the pizza oven at a much more conducive height for working with pizza. Unlike most of the pizza ovens we work with, since there's no direct flame contact, minimal turning is required during the cook using the live fire pizza oven.

Conclusion

We've been using this live fire grill for a week now and one of the main things that I've noticed is that I'm finding myself pulling up a chair and just sitting with my grill during a cook more than I ever have with my other grills.

It probably sounds really weird but it's almost like there's more of a "relationship" when cooking with live-fire than my other grills. There's constant communication back and forth and give and take and it just makes me want to sit with it and get to know it better and understand what makes it tick.

Guys, I think I'm developing a little bit of a crush on live fire cooking.

What about you? Does the idea of having to slow down and be a more engaged part of the cook excite you, intimidate you, or bother you? Let us know down in the comments below.

Over the last several years I've grown more and more passionate about the importance of gathering people around food and fire, and if that's the goal, this Breeo live fire grill really nailed it.

We've always been impressed with the quality of all the Breeo products we've received, and even though the grill is not manufactured in Lancaster, PA with everything else, it still has that unmistakable Breeo quality with a warranty to back it up.
