Fusion Grill Basics
Attractive Design
When I first laid eyes on The Fusion Grill, I was immediately drawn to the 304 stainless steel construction that sure doesn't look like stainless steel. The finish is an embossed finger print guard material, and guests at The Lab are always remarking on the finish on this grill.
Double Walled Construction
I like that the grill is double walled, providing exceptional heat retention and minimizing temperature fluctuations. I find this very useful when I'm fighting high winds or trying to make the best use of smoke when cooking low and slow. It also means that the lid is cool-"ish" to the touch even when it's at full heat on the inside.
Unique Oven Burner Design
Unlike a traditional propane grill, the middle of the three gas burners sits much lower than the other two. A built in drawer actually sits above that lower burner and can be used to hold charcoal, wood pellets, or smoking wood splits. That lower burner can be turned on to ignite the fuel in the drawer and then turned off if no longer needed.
However, it's worth noting that If you're NOT looking for smoke, you can also use this grill like an oven using that lower burner. It's a great way to cook with indirect heat with no risk of flare-ups.
Cooking Space
The Fusion Grill offers 650 square inches of cooking space with heavy-duty cast iron cooking grates that provide even heat distribution and create beautiful grill marks on your protein. I really like that the warming rack folds back when the lid opens, or it can be removed altogether.
Removable Side Shelves
The side shelves are truly unique. There are two thick wood cutting boards that sit on slide in rails functioning as the side shelves. Just pick up the board, carry it inside and transporting food to and from the grill has never been easier.

Grilling on the Black Earth Fusion
In addition to its many other functions, the Fusion Grill is a pretty great gas grill. We've grilled a great number of meats, from freshly ground brisket burgers to dry rubbed chicken thighs, and have produced delicious food every time.
The cast iron grill grates are reversible, offering a side with a thicker surface area for better sear coverage. (The thin side can be utilized when using it as an oven or smoker).
Smoking on the Black Earth Fusion
This freestanding hybrid grill isn't just a gas grill, and it was time to test out the charcoal and wood smoking capability.
To fire up the Black Earth Fusion Grill, I put a split of cherry wood and a handful of lump charcoal in the built-in drawer and ignited the lower gas burner. Once that burner lit the fuel in the drawer, I turned it off and let wood and charcoal do the cooking.
I smoked a rack of beef ribs using only the fuel I added to that drawer and after two and a half hours they were ready to be wrapped and I let the lower oven burner provide indirect heat for the remainder of the cook.

We used this griddle to cook up everything from a full breakfast spread of hashbrowns, bacon, eggs, and french toast to smashburgers, and we were thoroughly impressed.
After cooking on this griddle, I don't know how to explain how much I like it other than to say that it feels like it was designed to be a griddle, but it's not just a griddle. Many multitasker cooking appliances have a griddle attachment that is really small and feels like it's an add-on that wasn't really thought through. That's not the case here. This griddle functions like a full blown griddle, not just an add-on, and the heat coverage was strong across the surface.
