Typhur Dome: Is It Worth The Price?

Today we're putting the brand new Typhur Dome 2 ultimate air fryer to the test to see if it's up to the challenge of becoming our new go-to indoor appliance.

Typhur Dome 2

We've been using the original Typhur Dome air fryer multiple times a day for the past 18 months and as much as I wanted to hate it (for the sole reason of the high price tag), I simply couldn't. It honestly was everything I wanted in an air fryer and more, and why we dubbed it the best air fryer in our roundup.

So now that Typhur has asked us to test out their newest model, the Dome 2 air fryer, I'm again a little skeptical, hoping that the differences I already see in the two models are for the better and that they haven't messed up the good thing they had going.

In this article we'll be putting the Typhur Dome 2 to the test in several different cooking modes as well as compare the new and original models to see what has changed, and hopefully even improved between the two. Let's see if this new air fryer is all it's cracked up to be.

Typhur Dome 2 vs. the OG Typhur Dome: What has changed?

There are 3 major differences that I've seen between the first and second generations of the Typhur Dome.

First, the new Typhur Dome 2 air fryer is slightly taller due to raised feet allowing air flow underneath the machine.

Second, this additional airflow is necessary because the Dome 2 air fryer now has dual heating elements. Like version 1, the new Dome 2 has a heating element above the cooking area. However, unlike the OG model, the new Dome has both the top as well as a second heating element below the basket that opens up new cooking opportunities that just weren't possible with the original.

Third, some Cooking Modes have changed. There are fewer presets visible on the Typhur Dome 2 display (though still available in the app) and several have changed settings from the original design.

For instance, our favorite setting on the Typhur Dome was probably the bacon button, which set the machine to 400° for 10 minutes. On the new Typhur Dome 2 the bacon button sets it to 335° for 13 minutes. A pretty drastic change, right? This is why I was a little nervous. (Keep reading to see how this change worked out in our cooking tests below.)

The Wings setting increased the temperature by 15 degrees in the newer model, which I fully supported. I previously thought it wasn't hot enough in the original, so this had me optimistic.

The steak setting temperature remained the same (450°) but increased the time from 6 to 10 minutes.

I found the Air Fry change intriguing. It's now only 330°, down from 355° with an increase of 2 minutes. Curious...

The Toast setting dropped 15 degrees and a minute of cook time. Honestly, toast is so subjective. Some people, like my son, like their toast completely burnt, while others, like my daughter, prefer it warm and still tender.

In the Typhur Dome 2, we lose the Fries, Frozen, Roast, Broil, and Dehydrate presets that were previously found in the original model, and gain Pizza, Grill, and Reheat. However, I will remind you that all of the lost presets and modes are still available from the app as seen below.

What Makes The Typhur Dome Air Fryer Different?

The Typhur Dome 2 is quite different from most traditional air fryers. Just the look alone is different. Most air fryer models are boxy and squarish, but the Dome has a very unique design that's curved and sleek and looks like it comes from the future.

Wide Basket

The drawer is incredibly wide, just over a foot deep and a food wide, and that's a standout in the market. What's also different is that the drawer is only 2 inches deep, so there's not a lot of vertical cooking space here.

I find that to be a benefit instead of a detriment since food stacked on top of food rarely cooks well in any air fryer I've ever tested. The ability to cook the same quantity of foods like chicken wings and french fries in a single layer rather than piled on top is a significant advantage over other air fryers on the market.

High Temperature

The Typhur Dome 2 has a top temperature of 450 degrees, which is 50 degrees higher than most air fryers on the market. Does 50 degrees make a difference? It may not sound like much, but there are many foods that crisp or sear much better at a slightly higher temperature.

Mobile App

This is the first air fryer we've tested that has mobile phone app integration, and it even enables remote control and notification when you're away from the kitchen. I'll admit that before this test, I'd never gotten a notification from my air fryer that my food was done, but the Dome is so quiet that I appreciate knowing what's going on when I'm not in the room.

The app also contains a library of over 50 recipes that can easily be prepared in the Typhur Dome air fryer.

Whisper Quiet

We tested how loud the original Dome was when running at 450 degrees, and we only registered 59.6 decibels at its highest audible level. For reference, a household refrigerator reads at 55 decibels, so we're talking just 4.6 decibels louder than the fridge we hear as background every day. We thought that was pretty impressive, until we ran the Dome 2 for the first time and could barely even hear that it was on.

Running at the same setting of 450 degrees, the Typhur Dome 2 only registered 53.7 decibels. When I say this air fryer is whisper quiet, that's no exaggeration.

Self-Cleaning Feature

The Typhur Dome 2 air fryer has a self-cleaning mode to clean all the build-up that we can't visibly see up inside the appliance itself. The self-clean function can be run for either 1 hour or 2 hours, for a deeper clean, and can only be started from the mobile app.

The self cleaning mode is similar to the self cleaning cycle you might find on your oven.

Typhur recommends running the self cleaning feature once a month, or more frequently depending on the type of use. I would imagine that this feature may have a great impact on the longevity of this appliance. I will admit, with our original Dome we didn't run the self clean function nearly as much as we should have. Maybe I'll do better with this new one.

Ceramic Coating

While most air fryers on the market use a nonstick coating for their basket and tray, Typhur has designed the Dome with a non-stick ceramic coating that is PFAS-free. And I will add that this ceramic coating holds up like you wouldn't believe.

We have used the original Typhur Dome constantly for a year and a half and there is hardly any visible difference between the old basket and the new basket from the inside. (The outside of the basket does show some wear from the constant sliding in and out of the appliance.)

Dishwasher Safe

Like most other air fryers, the drawer and removable tray are both dishwasher safe. However, it takes a LOT of real estate in the dishwasher so we usually opt to just hand wash so we can have more space for all of our other dirty dishes. It hand washes very easily because of the slick ceramic coating.

Warranty

The Dome comes with a 3 year warranty, which really stands out in the air fryer space. Most air fryers are only covered for one year. Additionally, Typhur also has a 30 day money back guarantee if you're unhappy with your purchase. You can try it out and experience it yourself.

Typhur Dome Air Fryer Cooking Tests

Bacon in the Typhur Dome 2 air fryer

As I mentioned before, the bacon preset changed from version 1 to 2 so bacon was the first thing I wanted to test. The results were intriguing. I put 6 slices of bacon in each of the Domes and activated their respective bacon settings.

The Dome 2 bacon shrunk up considerably more than the Dome 1 bacon. It also seemed a little less done than I was expecting.

So naturally, I had to try it again the next day. 6 more slices of bacon went into the Dome 2 with the new updated bacon preset, and this time it cooked perfectly to my liking.

So I don't know. I honestly don't remember if it was the same brand/variety of bacon both times, but that can certainly affect the time needed to cook bacon if it's a thicker cut.

I'm just relived to know that I can still count on the Typhur Dome 2 to easily cook my morning bacon!

Chicken Wings in the Typhur Dome 2

I seasoned up some party wings with our Feathered Formula rub and put them in the Dome with the wings setting of 395° for 14 minutes. Though they temped just right, they hadn't quite reached the crispiness I like in wings so I put them back in for just a few more minutes.

I still prefer my chicken wings cooked hot and fast and indirect on a charcoal grill or pellet grill, but it's nice to know I've got the Typhur Dome 2 on standby if the weather isn't cooperating.

Pancakes in an air fryer?!?

We have of course used the Dome to reheat leftover pancakes in the past, but never have I imagined that I'd plop actual pancake batter into the basket of my air fryer. However, with the addition of the bottom heating element, the Typhur Dome 2 can now function as a griddle. I was SUPER skeptical that this would work. I was proven wrong.

I made a batch of our homemade buttermilk pancake batter using King Arthur 1-to-1 gluten free flour since our daughter has recently been diagnosed with celiac disease. (Side note, this air fryer will now be our dedicated gluten free air fryer/toaster/griddle solution to prevent cross contamination).

I took out the removable tray, found the Air Fryer Pancakes recipe in the app (even though I was using my own recipe for the batter), and hit "start cooking". The app initiated the preheat time and notified me when it was ready for me to start cooking the pancakes.

I was honestly shocked at how well this worked. The pancakes were nicely browned and cooked all the way through.

I certainly can't cook any quantity of pancakes as quickly as I can on a much larger outdoor griddle, but I love that this upgrade has been made! I can see how the Typhur Dome 2 would be the absolute best air fryer for anyone working out of a small kitchen to eliminate the need for all the extra appliances.

The pancakes surprised me so much that after those were done I decided to try a sausage patty and an egg. And the crazy thing was, it actually worked. I had to cut off the crispy edges of the egg because it slid around a little as I was transferring the tray into the Dome, but the actual egg part was cooked perfectly! (mind blown)

Grilled Steak in the Typhur Dome Air Fryer

I tested grilling steak 3 different ways in the Typhur Dome 2.

First, I left the "grill plate" in the basket and selected the Steak option in the menu. It started a 7 minute preheat cycle. Once that was complete I put in my salted sirloin steak with a Typhur Gold Sync probe inserted to monitor the internal temperature, and moved onto the cook portion. The timing of that setting was exactly perfect because the Gold Sync notified me that I'd reached my desired doneness right when the cook was complete.

I pulled the basket out, and here's what that steak looked like on the top and bottom. Kind of underwhelming, but I live at The Barbecue Lab. I know what a beautifully seared steak tastes like. It would be very tough for any air fryer to compete.

The next day I tried the exact same process with a flank steak, only this time I removed the grill plate. After successfully griddling pancakes in there that morning, I thought maybe that would work to my advantage. But again, I was underwhelmed.

I later tried one more steak using an accessory called the SearNSizzle from GrillGrate. It's a hard anodized circular grill panel that helps us get grill marks, even in an air fryer. We use these often in our outdoor grills. I placed the SearNSizzle in the basket without the grill plate and let it preheat with the air fryer. Then I placed the steak on the hot grate for the cook. And this is what it looked like when it was done.

All-in-all, an air fryer would not be among my top 5 choices for how to cook a steak, but again, for someone with a small kitchen and perhaps no grill, this could work. But I would highly recommend picking up that SearNSizzle if you do.

Our Typhur Dome Air Fryer Review

Ok, I have a confession. We went into this relationship with the Typhur Dome as skeptics.

Who does this air fryer think he is costing 3-5 times more than all the other air fryer models?

Well, I'll tell you who he is: The Dome is a premium air fryer that excels in all things air-fryer related and then some.

We have continually been blown away by the truly impressive results with such minimal effort on our part, and trust me, we were looking for flaws.

The Typhur Dome 2 only improved on what was already excellent.

If you have the budget for premium products like this, you will not be disappointed with the Typhur Dome 2. Its innovative design and extra features are second to none that we've encountered and we absolutely recommend it.
