Grilla Grills Mammoth Vertical Pellet Grill Review

Grilla Grills Mammoth vertical pellet smoker has an incredible amount of cooking space

If maximum cooking space in a small footprint is your goal, it's time to take a good look at the Mammoth vertical pellet smoker.

Hopper

The Mammoth hopper holds 40 pounds of pellets and thankfully includes a pellet dump feature in case you want to change flavors along the way. At that capacity, a full hopper has a burn time of around 48 hours when running the smoker around 250°.

There is a rubber seal under the lid of the hopper that gives an extra layer of protection to the pellets and we haven't had any issues with moisture compromising our fuel.

Extra smoke flavor

If you want to increase smoke production, the Mammoth has a lipped heat deflector over the burn pot.

You can add wood chunks or wood chips to that deflector and they will smolder during your cook, adding another dimension of smoke.

However, keep in mind that the deflector is directly over the burn pot, so I wouldn't recommend adding wood chunks when running the Mammoth hot or they're likely to do a lot more than smolder.

Double Wall Insulation

The Grilla Mammoth can be a cold weather smoker because of its double wall insulation and door gasket. We have found it to demonstrate excellent fuel efficiency even in less-than-optimal weather conditions and wind.

Vertical Pellet Smoker Cooking Space

The Mammoth vertical pellet smoker comes with 5 stainless steel racks offering 1600 square inches of cooking space. The cooking chamber has 10 rack locations so it's fully customizable depending on the height of the food you're smoking. Grates can be rearranged to accommodate taller foods, whether you're cooking pork butts or 20-pound turkeys.

Additionally, accessory grates are available so if you're interested in smoking a large quantity of something short, like racks of ribs, the Mammoth has room to expand to over 3600 square inches of cooking surface with the addition of up to 5 additional racks.

In addition to the 5 included racks, the Mammoth also comes with a hanging rack and 24 S hooks for hanging things like sausage. In fact, by removing the racks, the upright design leaves room for 6 cubic feet of hanging space.

The Mammoth also comes with a large stainless steel water pan to help keep your meat moist. It might be helpful to know that a full size aluminum pan fits perfectly to help make cleanup easy.

Digital Controller

The Mammoth includes the Grilla Grills Alpha Connect 2.0 Controller, which features both a PID and Pro mode for more smoke. The temperature range of the Mammoth is 180-450°F and can be set in 5-degree increments. The controller has 2 probe ports and 2 meat probes come included with your purchase.

Grilla Grills offers an app that can give you the ability to monitor and adjust temperature remotely from your mobile device. Connecting the Mammoth to WiFi wasn't difficult, but you have to be able to temporarily change your router settings to 2.4ghz first.

Our Honest Review of the Grilla Mammoth vertical pellet smoker

What We Love About the Grilla Mammoth

  • I absolutely love how easy the Mammoth vertical pellet smoker was to assemble. We just had to take it out of the box, attach the legs and a few other small odds and ends, stand it up, and we were ready to start cooking. Any outdoor cooking appliance that takes 30 minutes or less to assemble is a win in my book.
  • The vertical design of this pellet grill means that we have a huge capacity in a very small footprint. There is so much cooking space in this smoker and it barely takes any space on your patio.
  • A full hopper can last 48 hours running at 250°. There's absolutely no running out of pellets mid cook and overnight cooks are no problem with this vertical pellet smoker.
  • While pellet grills aren't known for their superior smoke flavor, the lipped heat deflector on the Mammoth is a nice and effective way to increase smoke production with the ability to smolder wood chunks or wood chips above the burn pot. Let's be clear, the Mammoth still isn't going to rival an offset smoker, but it is a great improvement on the limited smoke penetration of pellets.
  • We've been really happy with the build quality of this smoker. Living in Indiana, we get to enjoy all 4 seasons at their finest, accompanied by lots of wind. The double wall insulation and gasket seal around the door are important to me. This is a solid pellet grill compared to many others that we've encountered here at the Lab.

What We Don't Love About the Grilla Mammoth

  • The Mammoth vertical pellet grill is difficult to move around in spite of its four pivot casters. It's top heavy, and with no handle to pull, the only way to move it is by pushing it forward, which is a recipe for disaster. We had a very difficult time moving this through the grass from the driveway to the back of our house. I really wish Grilla had included a handle or two in their design.
  • Though I don't do a lot of cold smoking or generally require smoking temperatures lower than 180°, I know many who do, and the fact that the Mammoth vertical pellet smoker does not go any lower may be a deal breaker for them.
  • I would like to see Grilla make a few improvements to the app. Even though the Mammoth includes 2 meat probes, I find myself using other 3rd party thermometers so I can set up notifications. While it's great to be able to pull out my phone and monitor internal temperatures from inside, I'd much rather my phone "tap me on the shoulder" and just tell me when my desired temperature has been reached. First world problems, I know, but when so many other grill brands have included this feature in their apps, it seems like a simple thing that would really enhance the Grilla app user experience.
  • The Grilla Grills Mammoth vertical pellet smoker retails for $999, which feels a little high to me. Granted, it features a HUGE capacity, but the price is still up there. I've seen the Mammoth go on sale for as little as $800 before and at that rate I think this purchase would be a great value for the money.

Final Thoughts

If you hope to smoke large quantities of food at a time and appreciate the ease of using a pellet grill over the more hands-on approach of traditional offset smokers, the Mammoth vertical pellet smoker is a great option to consider.

However, if you don't think you would fully utilize the large capacity of this cooker, we highly recommend taking a good look at the Grilla Grills Silverbac. Of course, with only 692 square inches of cooking space, it can't even compare to the Mammoth, but this has honestly been one of our favorite pellet grills around the $1000 price point for the last several years and think it's definitely worth considering.
